When deciding what type of wedding venue to choose for your reception, many couples forget about marquees as an option, although they are becoming more popular.

Basically anywhere that has an outdoor space big enough can be used and that includes all the traditional venues such as hotels, Stately Homes, Country Spa and Health Clubs etc. If you have a marquee in one of these types of venue then don’t expect it to be a cheaper option. You might find it would be better for your budget if you hired one of the large function rooms instead.

Of course if you have your own large garden, or perhaps a friend or family member is obliging, hiring the marquee could work out a lot cheaper. Basically you will have to involve yourself with the marquee company, the people providing the music and entertainment, the caterers and the florist. There will obviously be requirements that are extra to this such as car hire, photographer, cake etc but these are not specific for a marquee event.

Taking your views and requirements into consideration (numbers of guests for example), the marquee company will design the marquee layout for you and will also provide the nuts and bolts of the design.

What about other services?

The florist will supply all the flowers and will have also supplied all arrangements for the church etc. They will set up the floral displays as you request, or do it for you if you are unsure.

The entertainment will be supplied by a band or DJ or an entertainer of some description and they will sort out all the sound system and possibly extra lighting. You need to be talking at length to these people so the music that is played is creating the ambience that you want.

The coordination of all these different parties is down to you, but if you are organised it needn’t be that stressful. You might also want to consider other options for your marquee reception as well as the basics. For example you might want more specialised lighting, fireworks, a toastmaster, a cocktail bar etc. etc.

The key to a successful marquee reception is getting organised in plenty of time and communication. You will be the central cog about which all these various companies and suppliers operate. Talk and coordinate at all times, get help from friends and pick the brains of the marquee supplier…..they will have seen it all before many times.
